Amazing Grace, with words written by John Newton and joined with the "New Britain" hymn tune, appeared for the first time in William Walker s shape note tunebook Southern Harmony in 1847. The present arrangement draws on folk and shape note traditions, and was premiered by the arranger (flugelhorn) and Gerry Senechal (organ) at a wedding.
