Pavane refers to a stately court dance performed in elaborate and elegant clothing that was popular in the 16th and 17th centuries. Faure himself described this piece as “elegant, but not otherwise important”. Since then it has become one of the great and most recognizable of melodies. In this version for flute quartet every player has the opportunity to play this simple, yet elegant melody which has proven to be timeless.
